A modular probe and sample carrier system was needed for the MPMS Evercool magnetometer.
Samples were to be subjected up to 5 Tesla magnetic fields at temperatures down to 1.8 K, illuminated with specific wavelengths of light, and have electrical measurements taken.
In addition to the magnetic and thermal environment, the assembly must fit within a 9mm diameter and support a vacuum seal and the associated pressure differential.
Traveler selected materials for the probe assembly, designed pluggable carriers and the plug assembly so that samples could be quickly changed. Another technician designed and fabricated the upper portion of the probe. The research physicist completed assembly and testing.
